Introduction to the College of International Studies

The College of International Studies of Yangzhou University has,since its inception in 1959, been an active research and teaching unit dedicated to the scientific study of language, renowned as one of the foreign languages talent training bases of Jiangsu province.


In 1959, Yangzhou Normal College set up the Foreign Languages Teaching and Research Section. In 1960, in line with social needs the Foreign Languages Teaching and Research Section was re-named the Foreign Languages Department consisting of two programs of Russian and English, with 76 students. In 1972, the Department of Foreign Languages was officially established. In 1977, it began to enroll undergraduate students majoring in English teaching for a period of four years. Its development in education continued until 1985 when it started the MA program in English Language and Literature. In May, 1992, six provincial colleges and universities located in Yangzhou merged into the present Yangzhou University. In August, 1998, the Department of Foreign Languages of the Yangzhou Normal College, together with the other five foreign languages teaching and research sections, became the current College of International Studies. 


The College offers a full range of degrees, from BA, to MA and PhD. It has 8 undergraduate programs including English Education, Translation, Business English, Japanese, Korean, French, Arabic and Spanish, 3 College English Teaching Units and 1 Postgraduate English Teaching Unit. Foreign Linguistics and Literature is a priority discipline for development in Jiangsu province, which covers a doctoral program in Foreign Linguistics and Literature, a doctoral program in Comparison and Integration of Chinese and Foreign Languages and Cultures, a Master’s program in Curriculum and Pedagogy, a Master’s program in Education and a Master’s program in Translation and Interpreting. 


Currently, there are 164 full-time faculty members in the College including 17 professors, and 44 associate professors, 55 teachers with doctoral degrees, 66 supervisors for Master’s students and 3 supervisors for doctoral students. In addition, the College hires a dozen foreign teachers on an annual basis. Great progress has been made in the building-up of well-trained teachers. The faculty members have been to some native English-speaking countries to be further trained or do research, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia. Among them, one teacher produced a doctoral thesis which was selected in 2008 as one of the national 100 outstanding doctoral theses; some excellent teachers were selected as members of Foreign Language Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education and China National Committee for Translation & Interpreting Education, Advanced Workers in Jiangsu Province, Advanced Educators in Jiangsu Province and National Outstanding Teachers for Master of Education, as well as the recipients of 333 High-level Talents Cultivation Project, Green & Blue Project of Jiangsu Province and New Century Talents Project of Yangzhou University awards. These projects aim to cultivate outstanding young backbone teachers, young and middle-aged academic leaders, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions. Three teachers won the first prize for three consecutive years in Jiangsu Young Teachers’ Teaching Competition.


The programs offered by the College enjoy a full range of honorary titles from the national level to the provincial level. Four programs, namely, English Education, Business English, Japanese, and Korean are listed as key programs at the provincial level. The English Education program passed the undergraduate evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2006 with distinction. In the same year, Yangzhou University was put on the list of model units in reform of College English Teaching. The College English course was selected as a national excellent course project in 2008 and selected as a national-level quality resource sharing course in 2013.


In recent years, 25 projects worked on by the teachers of the College have been granted by China’s National Social Science Council; more than 80 books have been published, including translation works and over 400 high-level academic papers published in SSCI, A&HCI and CSSCI academic journals. On top of that, a multitude of brilliant prizes were awarded to the excellent teachers in the College, namely one first prize and two second prizes in the competition of higher education achievements in Jiangsu province, one outstanding achievement award for scientific research institutions of higher education by the Ministry of Education (Humanities& Social Sciences), two first prizes, one second prize and two third prizes for excellent achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences in Jiangsu province as well as over 10 other outstanding achievement awards for Social Sciences at provincial, municipal and university levels.


The disciplinary development in the College goes well. We have established a “Sultan Research Center” which is a national and regional research base subject to the Ministry of Education, Jiangsu Province Social Sciences Research and Development Base, a provincial educating base for philosophy and social science, i.e.“Comparative Research Center for Chinese and Foreign Languages and Culture” and a batch of university-level philosophy and social sciences research bases. Meanwhile, the College and Jiangsu Translators Association have co-founded the magazine named Translation Forum.


With 1140 full-time registered undergraduate students, 614 registered postgraduate students, and over 800 mature undergraduate students, the College ranks top in Jiangsu province in terms of quantity and quality for educating students. In recent years, our students havewon many awards in thesis writing, competitions, speaking contests and so on. Five postgraduates’ theses were awarded the Jiangsu Provincial Excellent Master’s Dissertation, and 18 projects proposed by the postgraduates were granted provincial postgraduate projects of the Scientific Research and Innovation Plan. Also one thesis was selected as National Excellent Dissertation for Master of Education; seven theses were regarded as Provincial Excellent Undergraduate Theses. Besides, in the 15th Challenge Cup extracurricular academic and scientific works competition for college students, the work entitled A Probe into the Route to Improving the International Attraction of China's Higher Education under the Framework of the Belt and Road Initiative—A Survey Based on the Education of Foreign Students to Jiangsu Coming from the Countries along the Belt and Road Initiative won the grand prize. Also, the grand prizes and first prizes have been won in such national competitions as Han Suyin Youth Translation Award Competition, CCTV Cup English Speech Contest,  FLTRP Cup English Speech Contest, The 21st Century·Lenovo Cup National English Essay Contest and so on. Graduates of all programs in this Collegeare favored in job markets and employment rate ranks top within the university.


As the Jiangsu Middle School Core English Teacher Training Base, the English Training Base for Candidates studying abroad, Jiangsu Speaking/Interpreting Test Center and Training Base, Sunshine Study Abroad Education Experimental Base of the Ministry of Education, Yangzhou University Test Center for TOEFL, GRE, IELTS, METS, JLPT, TOPIK, BEC and SIA, the College provides many social, economic, and culture-construction-oriented services. 

In addition, to support teaching and research, the Foreign Language Education Broadcasting Station, the Digital Language Laboratory and a Phonetics-Audition-Cognition Science Laboratory, Simultaneous Interpreting Center, Recording Room, the Foreign Language Study Center and the College library have all been set up.


The College aims to develop itself into a teaching- and research- oriented first class college which is prestigious and influential nationwide in line with the“Teachers’ morals come first, teaching stays important, and research remains a cornerstone” principle and “priority stressed, classified instructions, and well-coordinated development ”principle.
